Exeter. Manuscripts. 1540 to date

The inclusion of manuscripts in a bibliography recognises the continuity of script, print and hypertext as media for the transmission and recording of ideas. Print did not kill manuscripts, just as digital media has not killed the book. Indeed in early times the printed book was very much a hybrid phenomenon. Not only did printers leave spaces for illuminators to embellish initials or add rubrics, but exotic scripts or music also had to be inserted by hand. Readers were invited to insert errata, or even to expurgate seditious or heretical passages. Readers were often compulsive annotators, and endpapers were filled with personal information. With the numbers of presses restricted, even in London, until the 18th century, it was often difficult to find a printer for a text, or to afford the costs of printing. Manuscript copies of the earliest histories and topographical accounts of Devon long circulated in manuscript before they haltingly got into print, and manuscript copies were even made of printed texts. Handwriiten newsletters also circulated in Devon in the late 17th century and many libellous and seditious leaflets were passed around or posted up in manuscript form. Many transcripts and indexes were also made of historical records and this practice continued well into the 20th century, particularly for genealogists. This listing does not aim for completeness and is based largely on the collections of the Westcountry Studies Library which are sufficiently comprehensive to show the changing nature of post-medieval manuscripts across the centuries in this chronological listing.
